In this article, we try clarify some of your questions.
Where do I get the basic full scale patterns from?
If you have practiced with the small scale patterns first and would like to repeat the exercises with the full scale patterns, there are several possibilities where you might be able to obtain them:
- buy a commercial pattern, which is closest to your size and similar in shape. Make sure that they are similar to our small scale patterns (fitted!). Have a look at all the main commercial retailers (Vogue, Burda....). Go for simple styles.
- you might be able to find some free basic patterns on the net - make sure they are your size.
- you can construct your own basic patterns with your individual measurements - we offer those in our basic pattern construction category.
What if the darts on my full scale patterns are different from those on the small scale ones?
There is the possibility that your basic skirt pattern has 2 waist darts instead of one. This can happen at the front as well as at the back skirt pattern.
If this is the case, you need to combine the 2 darts into one - the method for that has been sent out in our first newsletters as a free download. Let us know, using our contact form, if you need this information - we will then send it to you.
Darts on your basic pattern are in a different position to the ones on our small scale patterns. This does not present a major problem, as these darts can easily be manipulated into another position. In order to be able to do this, download one of our dart manipulation methods in out category "Pattern Cutting Techniques"- we would suggest you start with the "Slashing Method", as this is the easiest way to move a dart from one position to another.
My A-Line skirt has some fullness, but I would like it to be fuller (Lesson 2)
Lesson 2 showed you, how to change a basic skirt pattern into an A-line shape. We used for this transformation one specific method (darts).
If you would like to introduce more fullness into your A-line skirt, there are two more techniques you could apply: "Slashing and Spreading" and "Extending an existing edge" - you can find both under the element "Fullness and Flare" in our category "Pattern Cutting Techniques".
I would like to add to my A-line skirt
There are many ways to embellish and complete your skirt.
Some of them are technical, for example the addition of a waistband - do you want a small or a deep waistband? May be you would like no waistband, just a facing?
How about stylistic additions such as pleats, gathers or pockets?
You find information on all these issues in out category "Design Elements".
I have not subscribed to the free course - if I do it now, will I still be able to receive lessons 1 and 2?
Yes! If you decide to subscribe now, we will send you all previous lessons.
Lesson 3 has just been sent out - so please continue to send in your comments!
